Malignant sarcoma is a rare form of cancer, accounting for approximately 1% of all adult solid tumors. In Taiwan, there are around 1800 to 2000 newly diagnosed cases of malignant sarcoma each year. However, the proportion of young people among sarcoma patients is higher compared to other cancers. Without comprehensive treatment plans and extensive experience, the prognosis and survival rates of sarcoma patients can be significantly affected compared to other cancers.
One distinguishing feature of malignant sarcoma is that it can originate from anywhere in the body, ranging from the extremities and trunk, abdominal and retroperitoneal areas, uterus and head/neck region, to cardiovascular and thoracic regions. Sarcoma can develop throughout the body.
The National Taiwan University Hospital Sarcoma Team has been established for 9 years, bringing together physicians from various specialties to form a multidisciplinary team dedicated to sarcoma patients. This team includes surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, urologists, thoracic surgeons, as well as pathologists, radiologists, and nuclear medicine specialists. Together, they collaborate to develop more comprehensive treatment plans tailored to the patients' conditions, offering sarcoma patients a wider range of treatment options.
Furthermore, our center is committed to sarcoma research, establishing a malignant sarcoma biobank and conducting genetic-related testing. We collect clinical data, pathological tissues, biological specimens, and other relevant information, integrating clinical and biological data to enhance research capabilities in malignant sarcoma in Taiwan.
