History and general introduction

The Department of Otolaryngology was founded in 1938. Previous chairmen of this department were Professor Kamimura, Professor T.S. Lin, Professor M.S., Tu, Associate Professor T.T. Liao, Associate Professor T.K. So Professor T. Hsieh, Professor M. M. Hsu, Professor S. Y. Lee, Associate Professor K.N. Lin and Professor C. J. Hsu. Professor Tzu-Yu Hsiao is the present chairman. The faculty members include 8 full-time teachers and 32 parttime teachers. This department is divided into 5 subspecialties: otology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck oncology and pediatric otolaryngology.

The Department provides top-class, high quality medical care for the patients in the field of ear, nose and throat. Moreover, in order to improve the academic level and to increase the international visibility, the Department has been actively involved in International affairs. For example, the Department has organized and hosted the following international symposiums: The 6th Taiwan-Japan ENT conference in 2001, the 3rd Easter Asian Conference on Phonosurgery in 2001, the 4th Asian Pacific Symposium for Cochlear Implantation and Related Sciences in 2003, the 8th Taiwan-Japan ENT Conference in 2005. Currently the Department has eighteen full time staffs including eight full time medical faculties: 3 professors, 4 associated professors and 1 assistant professor. Each year the clinical service of this department includes 90000 people/time per year, 20000 hearing tests, 6079 ward admissions and 3636 different kinds of operations.

Division of Head and Neck Oncology

There are four attending surgeons in the division of Head and Neck Oncology who are able to complete major operations of head and neck malignancies. The treatment of head and neck cancers is a multi-modality team work that combines specialists from different Departments. In oral cancer, which is by far the most common head and neck cancer in Taiwan, surgery is the treatment of choice. We will complete the tumor resection and the plastic surgeons will continue to work on the surgical defects for cosmetic and functional reconstruction. In nasopharyngeal carcinoma, we have implemented chemotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy to significantly improve the patients’ treatment outcome and survival. Operations that are routinely performed in our department include: surgery for oral cancers, laser surgery for early laryngeal cancers, radical surgery for advanced laryngeal and/or hypopharyngeal cancers, organ-preservation therapy for oropharyngeal cancers, surgery for sino-nasal cancers, surgery for benign and malignant salivary gland tumors, surgery for ear cancers, ad surgery for benign and malignant thyroid tumors. We are also deeply involved in the development of novel treatment modalities for head and neck cancers, which includes endoscopic laser nasopharyngectomy for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, photodynamic therapy for head and neck superficial tumors, molecular-targeted therapy for head and neck cancers, trans-nasal fiberscopic pharyngo-esophago-gastroscopy combining narrow band imaging under local anesthesia for the diagnosis and tumor mapping of laryngo-pharyngo-esophageal cancers. 

Division of Otology

Otology encompasses a wide range of diseases such as external ear, middle ear, inner ear and inner ear related central neurological systems. In the functional aspects, otology covers two major areas: hearing and balance. The otology department provides medical and surgical treatment of the following disorders: congenital anomalies, inflammatory diseases, hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo. Some advanced operations performed in this department include translabyrinthine resection of acoustic neuroma, glomus Jugulare tumor surgery, facial nerve decompression, cochlear implantation, Baha insertion etc. Other services offered by this department such as genetic screening of congenital deafness, vertigo and hearing aid fitting also result in very good outcome for the patients. In the past 30 years, the department has held a temporal dissection course every year to train our residents in the field of otological surgery. The Otology division of this department is the leading and the largest one in this country. There are 7 attending doctors, 4 have Ph D degree from the prestigious Universities of U.S.A., Japan and Taiwan. 
 
Division of Rhinology

The rhinologic division is responsible for treating all kinds of sinonasal illness including benign neoplasm and inflammatory disease in sinonasal territory. Recent advances in endoscopic, imaging, diagnositic techniques such as fiberoptic or rigid endoscope; CT scan or MRI; antigen specific IgE and biochemistry blood test etc., render the improvement of diagnosis and cure rate in sinonasal diseases. Rhinommanometry and acoustic rhinometry are also used to measure the severity of nasal blockage. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) with microdebrider and nasal surgery with laser are the mainstays in surgical intervention for sinonasal diseases at present. Detailed CT image plus FESS have efficiently increased the accuracy of surgery and reduced the postoperative morbidity in comparison with conventional destructive sinonasal surgery. It may also facilitate the combined surgery of pituitary gland and skull base with neurosurgeon.

Division of Stomapharyngolaryngology (Laryngology)

In this division, we manage disorders of oral cavity, salivary glands, tonsils, swallowing functions, pharynx, larynx, voice and obstructive sleep apnea. Both clinical services and basic researches of the above disorders are equally put emphasis on and all the members of the staff are going all out to keep the state of the art.
Patients-care and disease-management have always been maintained in a very high standard in this hospital. Therefore, all the patients here can firmly assured of the best care until they regain their health.

Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology

We have the most recognized expert team for pediatric otorhinolaryngology, which include the diseases of children in ear, nose, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi, sleep disorder, congenital and acquired anomalies, tumors of head and neck, especially focusing on the pediatric airway diseases, such as congenital laryngotracheal anomaly, acquired laryngotracheal disorder. The diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies have been performed routinely for premature babies, newborns, infants and small children. Besides, the newborn hearing screen program has been done for over 11,058 cases since Dec. 2001. Pediatric cochlear implantation has been performed for 78 cases since Mar. 1995. The technology of genetic diagnosis for congenital and acquired hearing impairments is also available.
