Academics

The academic training in the department includes training for Clerks, Interns, Residents and Attending Physicians.

 

Training goals

  1. Clerk training: to introduce common ophthalmic diseases and general examination methods in the ophthalmological field.
  2. Intern training: to emphasize the diagnosis of ocular diseases; to involve the trainees in the handling of instruments and treatment processes; to supervise first-line care by the trainee for patients with ocular emergency.
  3. Resident training: to provide training programs essential for conducting a fine comprehensive ophthalmological practice, becoming an administrative leader in local medical center, or pursuing further study in a special field.
  4. Attending physician training: to advance knowledge and skills in patient care, research and teaching ability, and administrative management

 

Training content

The training program is basically composed of:

  1. Clinical Training: The basic training includes ward rounds, out-patient and in-patient teaching, emergency medical care, and practice of surgical techniques.
  2. Academic Activities: The basic projects are: Morning meetings (Monday through Friday), Ground round (Wednesday afternoon), Journal reading (Monday through Friday afternoon), Special lectures by the staff members or invited guest (Saturday morning)
  3. Research Training: Residents should perform medical research on topics of importance or interest under the guidance of staff members; they are asked to assist attending physicians in clinical studies. The research results should be presented in the resident day held in mid-year.
  4. Management and Leadership Training: Teaching responsibilities to students and residents as well as various administrative works are assigned to young attending physicians by the Department Chair as a way of management and leadership training.
  5. Continuing Education: Young attending physicians are encouraged to undertake short-term ( 3 months or less) or long-term (12 months or more) study at the world leading ophthalmological centers or admit to the clinical research graduate school to enhance their clinical skills and more importantly, their research ability.
