  1. Correcting strabismus – Higher-precision strabismus diagnosis and treatment procedures are developed by leveraging medical imaging technology.
  2. Orbital fat removal – Treatment outcomes can be predicted by quantifying orbital fat, which is fantastic news for patients of Graves' ophthalmopathy (thyroid eye disease).
  3. We can diagnose glaucoma cases from minor symptoms, without first-stage patients going undetected.
  4. To peel or not to peel, that is the question – Patients with macular traction from high myopia are treated with a pioneering and greatly improved internal limiting membrane peeling technique.
  5. Taking on the responsibility of overseeing the National Eye Bank of Taiwan, NTUH has significantly raised both the quantity and quality of cornea donations to honor the legacies of our cornea donors.
  6. Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery – Assisted by the latest laser technology and image guided system, we offer our patients greatly improved vision with high-precision, high-efficiency and tailor-made surgical procedures.

Department Profile

The Department of Ophthalmology became the third specialty department established by National Taiwan University Hospital in March 1897.

Serving a large number of patients on a daily basis, we offer a wide variety of specialized examination and treatment options while continuing to adopt the latest medical equipment and technology. We pride ourselves in maintaining excellent standards in ophthalmological care comparable to those of the best hospitals in the world. The department is functionally divided into the following seven specialties: Cornea, Retina, Pediatric Ophthalmology & Refraction, Oculoplasty, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, and Uveitis.

Below is an outline of the direction we have planned for the department. On the medical care front, we take an active approach in adopting the most advanced medical technology to improve the quality of care. In the area of academic development, the focus of our research is on domestic eye diseases and on innovative treatment methods, as well as on research at the levels of genomic medicine and molecular biology. As for the education of our medical students, apart from conventional classroom teaching, we also place an emphasis on clinical training and minimally invasive surgical procedures. Production of pedagogical videos also aids in our teaching efforts. For our resident physicians, we have adopted a step-by-step approach in our training programs, which include clinical diagnosis and treatment, surgical training and the development of medical research skills, with the objective of educating them to become the country’s top specialists in our field.

Going forward, the Department of Ophthalmology will continue to improve ourselves to achieve the best that we can be. In addition to contributing to society, we have set our sights on becoming one of the leading ophthalmology departments in the world.

Our Strengths

Based on the diverse needs of our patients and the categorization of eye diseases, the department takes an active approach in training subspecialists in various functional subdisciplines. In addition to receiving subspecialty training abroad, our physicians also participate regularly in domestic and international seminars to keep their clinical techniques and academic research at the highest and most advanced levels globally.

Our doctors in the Cornea Section have published many research papers in international journals on the diagnosis and treatment of corneal ulcers and excimer laser refractive surgeries. NTUH is the first hospital in Taiwan to have introduced excimer laser surgery for myopia correction. Since 1983, the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Refraction Section has conducted epidemiological investigations, over a number of periods totaling more than twenty years, on the refractive changes in Taiwanese schoolchildren. We have achieved outstanding results in the research of myopia-related genetics and medication, strabismus, amblyopia, and stereoscopic vision. The Glaucoma Section has made unique contributions to the treatment of closure glaucoma. The Oculoplasty Section has achieved remarkable progress in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid eye diseases and orbital tumors. In addition to being innovative in surgical procedures for retinal detachment and chorioretinal vascular diseases, the Retina Section has achieved impressive results in the basic research of laser and drug treatment as well as cytokines.

The department holds weekly academic conferences conducted in the English language in order to enhance doctors’ communicative capabilities when delivering presentations to a wider audience in international symposiums. At daily morning meetings, case conferences are also carried out for various subspecialties.

Service Offerings

Cataract Treatment
We utilize surgical microscopes of the highest precision and the most advanced phacoemulsification equipment to develop mini-incision, suture-free cataract surgeries with foldable intraocular lenses. Nd:YAG laser can be used at the outpatient clinic’s laser center to treat after cataracts.

Photorefractive Correction Treatment
We currently employ the most advanced wavefront technology to tailor laser treatments for individual patients to correct refractive problems and higher-order aberrations. Flying spot is used in conjunction with an iris recognition system and an eye tracker to enable speedy and precision surgeries. For the creation of corneal flaps, the latest femtosecond lasers are available as a treatment option in addition to microkeratomes.

The Department of Ophthalmology comprises seven subspecialty sections. We perform examinations, diagnoses, treatments and surgeries for various eye diseases.
