Introduction

In 1946, the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) and College of Medicine was established. Since 1991, it was separated into the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Neurology. Since then, the Department of Psychiatry has been devoted to teaching, research, and clinical service on psychiatric medicine. Today, we provide outpatient service, daycare of adults and children, and acute wards of the psychotic and neurotic disorders. Our staffs include psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists. We take a multidimensional psychopathological approach, namely biological, psychological, familial, social, and cultural, to provide the most effective prophylaxis, treatment, and rehabilitation for patients with mental problems.

In addition to high quality medical service, we are also devoted to medical education and psychiatric research programs. With our recent contributions in clinical research, our goal is to pursue excellence in research, education, and clinical service to be recognized as one of the outstanding departments of psychiatry in Asia and in the world as well.

FEATURES
The Department of Psychiatry lays emphasis on the humanity aspect of clinical needs in the settings of both software and hardware. Besides the separated outpatient department, the elegant and spacious inpatient wards, which locate in the west side of NTUH, provide our patients with high-quality care. The core of our service is humanity-centered and underpinned by multifaceted considerations about patients’ psychopathology in biological, psychological, social, familial, and cultural domains. Moreover,  we provide daycare service for rehabilitation programs. With the humane treatment, not only are symptoms resolved, but the socio-occupational function are restored, and the patients’ lives are more meaningful than ever. We also provide daycare programs for transferred inpatients and outpatients with psychosomatic problems; and a daycare unit designed for early intervention for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders.

For stress-related disorders, in addition to pharmacological therapies based on neurobiological evidence, we also applied various kinds of psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, group psychotherapy, marital counseling, and genetic counseling. Furthermore, we have excellent service and training programs of consultation-liaison medicine. For patients with major medical diseases or ongoing organ transplantation, our service, as part of the team works, offers professional psychiatric care.

We have always been enthusiastic at clinical trials of miscellaneous novel pharmaceutical agents (anxiolytics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, medication for ADHD, and geriatric medicine). In addition to regular services for conventional mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorders, major depressive disorders, we also provide treatment for various specific psychiatric diseases such as autism, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and related genetic counseling for child population; . eating disorders, sleep disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and the thinking/perception disturbance of prodromal schizophrenia for adults.. For general population, we offer empowerment programs of mental health. We lead the most pioneering studies in genetics, neurobiology, and environmental science, establishing profound basis for the accurate diagnosis, effective and novel treatments, and rehabilitation programs of psychiatric disorders.
