Introduction Apprenticeship is the traditional training model of medical education. Through management of actual patients, senior physicians teach junior physicians at the bedside. Therefore, clinical skills acquisition and knowledge transfer occur during clinical practice, using the so called. ˇ¨See one, do one, teach oneˇ¨ process of learning. However, in the current environment of increasing emphasis on patient rights, to gain knowledge through trial and error at the expense of patient safety is unacceptable. To reduce the reliance of learning on random patient encounters, traditional method of medical education should be revised. Due to the rapid progress of virtual technology, many clinical skills and experiences can be developed and practiced on simulating model prior to being performed on actual patients. In order to enhance the clinical skills of junior physicians, medical students and allied health professionals, while advancing quality of care and improve patient safety, National Taiwan University Hospital established a world class clinical skills training center. The center opened its doors in December,2005. Goals -Incorporate existing teaching materials to facilitate resource management -Manage and plan clinical skills training curriculum to establish mechanisms of objective evaluation -Offer the facilities and opportunities for self- learning to reduce malpractice -Cultivate logical thinking and critical decision making to enhance quality of medical care -Create a safe environment for each medical encounter and improve patient-doctor relationship -Integrate humanity and technology to ensure patient safety Intended Audience Resident and intern physicians, medical and nursing students, and allied health professionals-in-training Available Facilities Virtual outpatient clinics, virtual intensive care unit, virtual operating room, skill laboratory, CPR training room, data storage room, small group classroom, observation room, and conference room Unique Features Important issues regarding quality of medical care, patient safety and clinical training are emerging as we step into a new era of global healthcare and education. This center is instituted to integrate cutting edge technology with the new education model and to enhance clinical decision making skills. The center is part of the universal trend to enrich medical education experience via simulation. What makes us different are as followingˇG -Standardized simulated patients -Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) -Advanced virtual medical practice environment -Crew resource management (CRM) -Clinical model/device education -Computer assistant education (e-learning) -Internet digitalized audio and video system Future Outlook In a busy and fast-paced society, a well-planned comprehensive training program and evaluation system is essential to provide healthcare centered on patient safety. By establishment of the clinical skills center, patient safety and quality of care will be promoted, and clinical skill will be enhanced. The center will provide an ideal foundation to breed future medical professionals, and fulfill the hospital vision of becoming the best university hospital in Asia.
