Brief Introduction

Mini-invasive interventional oncology is a minimally invasive approach to the treatment of tumors through the use of advanced image-guided procedures. Ablation-based oncological procedures destroy tumors through the delivery of heat, freezing (cryo treatment), laser light, or electromagnetic energy. Mini-invasive interventional oncology includes conventional therapeutic procedures, such as thermoablation, cryoablation, photodynamic therapy, transarterial chemoembolization, endoscopic tumor therapy and irreversible electroporation. These methods are referred to as minimally invasive therapy, tumor ablation, or interventional oncology.

Interventional oncology is minimally invasive and highly effective, on par with traditional surgery, internal medicine, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Variations in therapy and the technological underpinnings have been developing rapidly, and many of the leaders in the field hold positions at NTUH. CMIO was established in 2014 in accordance with the "NTUH Asia first plan". We believe that the most effective way to contribute to humanity is to concentrate our efforts in this area. We are committed to integrating the resources of interventional oncology and building a platform to accelerate developments in this field.

The services provided by CMIO are as follows:

  • Promoting the exchange of knowledge among the various divisions of interventional oncology and building team consensus.
  • Developing advanced image-guided tools for clinical treatment and research.
  • Resolving existing dilemmas through the integration of existing treatment methods and clinical research.
  • CMIO will be the first school in Asia to provide training in the field of minimally invasive therapy for medical personnel, both domestic and foreign.
  • Finally, CMIO will also provide a window through which to access advanced technology from other countries and promote domestic developments in interventional medicine.

Teaching, service, and research are the primary duties of NTUH and CMIO alike
