Periodontics

Introduction

The clinical instruction on Periodontology was begun in 1953 by Dr. Jing-Tsai Huang. It was only focusing on full mouth scaling and gingivectomy at that time. Starting from 1970’s, the periodontal therapy was developed by Dr. Kuan-Hsiaung Tsai and Wen-Quee Chang. The treatment concepts include periodontal examination, full mouth scaling, oral hygiene instruction and periodontal surgery with flap operation, gingivectomy and guided tissue regeneration using membrane and bone graft. In 1984, Division of Periodontics was founded as one of nine subspecialties of Department of Dentistry in NTU.
In 1997, the division pioneered in training of specialty in Periodontics. This encouraged the basic and clinical research in Periodontics in Taiwan. In 2001, the continuing periodontal training courses was set up by Dr. Lein-Tuan Hou. The courses include periodontal case conference, literature review in Periodontics, surgical seminar, implant seminar, implant procedure and outcome assessment, periodontal microbiology and immunology, oral pathology, and combined meeting with prosthodontics and orthodontics.
