  • In basic research on oral tumors, the methylation of two tumor suppressor genes, PAX1 and ZNF582, has been identified as important biomarkers for early screening of oral mucosal diseases and oral cancer. These biomarkers are also associated with oral cancer recurrence and patient survival time. Multiple papers have been published in this field, and the findings represent significant progress in early detection of oral cancer. Furthermore, a new pathogenic mechanism of oral cancer has been discovered: arecoline-induced extracellular vesicles (EVs) were found to carry mtDNA D-loop and PD-L1, contributing to immune suppression. On the other hand, a microbial-derived biological response modifier (BRM)—WGP β-glucan, extracted from yeast and composed of β-1,3-linked D-glucose molecules—has known clinical immunomodulatory effects. It enhances immune function by activating CD4/CD8 T cells, inhibiting Treg cells, and promoting apoptosis, thereby benefiting OSCC (oral squamous cell carcinoma) patients as an adjunct to targeted and immunotherapy. This finding has been adopted by the Nutrition Department of National Taiwan University Hospital as a routine supplemental therapy, administered to head and neck cancer patients while awaiting surgery—an important advancement in supportive treatment. Most notably, research on the use of mini-implants for treating malocclusion has been highly influential. The results were published in The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants (IJOMI) and have been cited over 430 times.
