Geometric morphometric methods
Network Meta-Analysis
Conventional roentgenographic cephalometric analysis appears to have certain limitations. Measurement of lines and angles by traditional methods is not able to locate the actual sites where the growth or treatment changes have occurred within the craniofacial skeleton. The conventional metrical approach depends upon reference planes and points. If the registration points or planes vary greatly, the use of such a technique may lead to misdiagnosis or misinterpretation.
Recently, geometric morphometric methods for shape comparisons have been developed to measure the biological size and shape changes induced by growth and treatment. Approaches such as thin-plate spline analysis, Euclidean distance matrix analysis, finite element analysis, tensor analysis, Fourier analysis, and shape-coordinate analysis were introduced as methodological enhancements in morphometrics. These methods are preferable to conventional cephalometry in that they provide explanatory visualization of shape changes and highlight regions of localized dissimilarity.
Our recent studies focus on the use of average geometries, generated by means of Procrustes analysis and in combination with graphical analysis, utilizing thin-plate spline interpolation and strain tensor methods to localize craniofacial changes in shape and size during growth and/or after orthodontic/orthopedic treatment. Maximum and minimum principal extensions were drawn to express the directions of shape change.
