The Emergency Department (ED) of the National Taiwan University Hospital began as the emergency section of the hospital in 1964. The section was located in a remote corner of the hospital providing basic emergency care to the public. As the number of patient increased, the emergency section became a division in 1972. The division was set up the basement level in the west wing of the hospital equipped with its own facilities. However, due to the limited amount of space and the continuing increase of patient load, the formal establishment of the department was 18 years later. The emergency department was relocated to the first floor of the east wing of the hospital in 1991, expanding to an area of 2488.5 m2. This marked the first emergency department in the country. The Department of Emergency Medicine as part of the medical college, was established in August 1994, and is the first academic department of emergency medicine in Taiwan. The emergency department has rapidly matured and has many accomplishments throughout the recently years. Gearing toward the ultimate goal of providing top notch quality care to its patients, pursuing frontier medical research in the field of emergency medicine, and provide a comprehensive training program and motivate learning atmosphere for its young physicians and medical students, these three main aims has been the primary devotion of this department.
