ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDING

Adjustable gastric banding uses a strip of silicon band to divide the stomach into a large portion and a smaller 30cc pouch. After the operation, the band can be adjusted by injecting into the access port located under the skin in your tummy either to tighten or loosen the band to produce satiety after ingestion of small amount of food.

Patients usually need 1 to 2 years after the surgery for band adjustment to produce the desired effect. It also requires patients' cooperation, strictly following instructions, adjusting to small oral feedings, eating solid food and avoiding liquid food, and doing moderate exercise like brisk walking, swimming and bicycling for maximal effect.

ADVANTAGES

  1. Simple operative procedures with less complications (<0.5%) and mortality (<0.1%)
  2. Adjust the tightness of band as necessary
  3. Removed completely in the future

DISADVANTAGES

  1. Less dramatic effect with 20% weight loss in the first year and 25% in the 2nd year
  2. Require up to 1 year of adjustment of the gastric band for desired effect
  3. infection may occur or a second operation may be required for band slippage
  4. Has to avoid high calorie liquids
