GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

Gastric bypass surgery is viewed as the gold standard for weight reduction in the United States. The aim of the operation is (1) to divide the stomach into a large portion and a small 30- 50cc portion, the latter where the food can pass through and thus easily create satiety; (2) to create intestinal diversion where 150- 200cm of small intestinal is prevented from food contact and thus less food absorption. In other word, you eat less, and digest and absorb even less. This is presently the most effective surgical approach in weight reduction.

Advantages

  1. Better and faster weight reduction with 30 -35% decrease in body weight in the 1st year
  2. Effective treatment for diabetes mellitus

Disadvantages

  1. Surgery more complicated with 1-5% complications and 0.3 -1% mortality
  2. Trace mineral absorption deficiency, anemia and other complications; require long term iron, calcium, folic acid, vitamin B complex, etc. supplementation
  3. Impossible to perform gastroscopy for early gastric cancer detection
