IMPLANTED GASTRIC BALLOON

This is strictly not an operation. A 400 - 700cc silicon balloon is placed in the stomach with the aid of a gastroscope under intravenous anesthesia. Because this does not entail any operation, the procedure is relatively safe. Although this is less invasive, this may only be used for a short time, hoping that patients develop healthy dietary habit and lifestyle or as a preliminary step for later more invasive gastric surgery in the treatment of pathologic obesity.

Advantages

  1. Painless, no operation done, relatively safe
  2. Reduce up to 10 -15% of body weight

Disadvantages

  1. Ineffective for those with poor diet control
  2. May experience vomiting during the first 3 days, but gradually improved later on
  3. As the implanted balloon has to be removed after 6 months, there is the danger of patients regaining weight after its removal
