History

  • Prior to the end of 2nd World War, our hospital did not have a department of laboratory medicine. All the lab tests were performed by clinicians then. Only few items were available, mostly within the scope of clinical microscopy. The laboratory was called "Bacteriology and Serology Room", performing lab tests for syphilis serology tests, and tests for infectious diseases including typhoid fever, two-week fever and shigella.

  • After the end of 2nd World War (1945), the laboratory services remained unchanged. Lab technicians were apprentices, and were trained by clinical doctors.

  • In March 1950, hospital director Dr Huo-Yao Wei began to centralize the laboratory.  The name "Bacteriology and Serology Room" was changed to "Central Laboratory Room". It was located in the basement area of the current Internal Medicine OPD. It had 5 rooms, including: "director's room", "room for biochemistry and preparation", "serology room", "bacteriology room", and "autoclave room". The lab director was Dr. Wen-Jay Wang (an internist). Teaching staffs from Medical school also helped. For example, Dr Guo-Huan Lin helped running biochemistry, Dr Jao-Shung Yang helped running serology and bacteriology. The lab also added EKG and basic metabolic rate service.
