About Us
Since the NTUH Department of Neurology and Psychiatry was divided in 1980, and a separate Department of Neurology founded, the field of neurology in Taiwan has flourished. Our department has established three branches, which include the Division of General Neurological and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Division of Neuromuscular Disorders, and Division of Diagnostic Neurophysiology. We not only provide patients with more effective treatment, but also extensively research the basic medical science of neurological diseases, and commit ourselves to the research and development of neurological studies.
Our History
In 1947, NTUH established the Division of Neurology and Psychiatry. In 1961, Professor Hung Tsu-Pei[1] returned to Taiwan after studying in Great Britain. With his help, the field of clinical neurology began to make significant advances.
In 1980, after the Department of Neurology became an independent branch, we became further committed to research in neurology. We not only worked together with the Graduate Institutes of Physiology, Anatomy, Pharmacology, and Immunology, but also helped to found patient organizations like the Multiple Sclerosis Association Taiwan and Taiwan Epilepsy Association, and held regular educational lectures.
In recent years, the Primary Stroke Center and the Center for Parkinson and Movement Disorders were founded in NTUH. We have seen more thorough research in a variety of specialty fields related to neurology.
Instruction
Resident Physicians:
Every week, we organize one case conference and two reading seminars, as well as one neurological case conference. We also occasionally hold academic lectures or research reflections from physicians in the department. We are also involved in joint monthly conferences[2] held by the teaching hospitals in northern Taiwan. Every year we join the Annual Meeting for the Taiwan Neurological Society to present research findings. Our physicians are also encouraged to join international medical societies to share their reflections on clinical and research findings.
Medical internship:
Under the guidance of third-year resident physicians, our interning physicians take responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment, and care of hospitalized patients. Once a week, they join the Department of Neurology in attending inter-departmental seminars.
Clinical clerkship:
Students participate in a three-week clinical learning program. Each group of students is headed by an attending physician, who is in charge of instruction. Students have the chance to engage with patients in outpatient services and take on diagnosis tasks. Each student is responsible for the care of one hospitalized patient, and hold discussions with and receive instruction from the group’s instructor regarding the patient’s condition.
