What Diseases Are Treated in the Department of Neurology?

Briefly speaking, all diseases related to the nervous system are treated in the Department of Neurology. The nervous system includes central nervous system (cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system. Traditionally, the diseases of muscle are also seen by neurologist. Each part of the nervous system may have its own characteristic diseases. A neurologist must act like a detective to identify the correct location of the disease and then determine the etiology. Here are the common diseases seen by neurologist:

Vascular diseases: Cerebrovascular disorders (stroke)

Headache: migraine, tension headache, cluster headache

Epilepsy and Seizures

Cognitive impairment: Dementia, delirium

Neurogenetic disorders: spinocerebellar ataxia, etc.

Infection of the central nervous system: meningitis and encephalitis

Tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system

Multiple sclerosis

Vertigo and dizziness

Neuromuscular disorders: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, polyneuropathy, myasthenia gravis, myopathies (muscular dystrophy, congenital myopathy, inflammatory myopathy, metabolic myopathy)

Pain disorders: neck pain, shoulder pain, low back pain, neuropathic pain (post- herpetic neuralgia, painful neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia)
