Child abuse and neglect has long become an important issue that raised our concern, especially as our institute are working to promote and advocate for children’s health and human rights. Annually, there are about 80 thousand of suspected cases of children mistreatment reported in Taiwan, and about 40 thousand cases were investigated and intervened by the authorities concerned. The causes of each child abuse event were complicated and relevant to family socioeconomic status, children’s development, mental problems or parenting issue, and many other factors. The abused children not only suffered from physical harms and poor growing environment, but also showed psychological trauma that would last long in many perspectives of their lives. Without proper intervention, the increasing pressures on the caregivers could gradually deteriorate the situations and eventually result in repeated patterns of mistreatment. Due to the significantly demand of medical and psychological care and therapies that these subjects and their family need, we started the “Children's Protection Medical Service Demonstration Center” in 2014, supported by a program from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan Government during 2014-2015, then continued through donations. We organize multidisciplinary health professionals across the hospital to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment and follow up for these children. In 2018, National Taiwan University Hospital and Children’s Hospital had officially established “Center for Child Protection Medical Care”. The Center provides many services including consultation, case management, medical care, integrated medical joined clinics, specific abuse related injury identification and consultation, legal and justice support and court appearance, psychological support and therapies, education, and others. We advocate for all the children to have safety under protection, and can physically and mentally grown up healthy.
