Services and Features
Purpose of Establishment
National Taiwan University Children's Hospital established the "Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center" in November 2008, which is the only interdisciplinary and integrative medical center in Taiwan dedicated to patients with congenital heart disease in adulthood. The purpose of the establishment is to provide integrative and comprehensive medical services, with adult congenital heart disease specialist physicians as the main focus, integrating pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiac surgeons, adult cardiologists, obstetricians and gynecologists, rehabilitation physicians, specialist nurses, and social workers, to provide patients with a holistic approach to medical care, allowing patients to fully understand their own condition, providing professional medical advice and treatment, and creating personalized health care plans for patients.
Services Provided by the Center
The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Special Clinic is set up every Tuesday morning in the 35th clinic of the Children's Medical Building. In addition to patients referred from inside and outside the hospital, patients can also register for appointments on their own. In addition, the center's case manager actively arranges for patients who have not been regularly followed up to return for appointments. The clinic services include determining the current condition of the heart, reviewing past medical history and previous treatments, assessing the patient's physical condition, checking for other diseases, assessing medication use, and conducting a detailed assessment of cardiac function, in order to detect problems early and provide timely and appropriate treatment. When necessary, referrals are arranged for rehabilitation (exercise advice and functional assessment), obstetrics and gynecology (high-risk pregnancy and contraceptive assessment), genetic counseling, and cardiac surgery.
In terms of treatment options, in addition to cardiac surgery, we also offer less invasive interventional cardiac catheterization treatments, such as closure of atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus ligation, closure of ventricular septal defects, balloon catheter dilation or stent placement, 3D stereotactic high-frequency ablation for the treatment of arrhythmia, implantation of pacemakers or biventricular synchronous pacemakers, and valve implantation via cardiac catheterization for patients with severe pulmonary or aortic valve stenosis or regurgitation.
We will provide detailed pre-pregnancy assessments for female patients of reproductive age. For risk factors that may increase the mother's or fetus' risk during pregnancy and childbirth, we will correct them as much as possible beforehand and continue to closely monitor the condition of the mother and fetus during pregnancy. The vast majority of congenital heart disease patients can significantly reduce the risks of pregnancy and childbirth through professional evaluation and assistance. For the rare cases where pregnancy is not suitable due to more severe conditions, such as severe pulmonary hypertension and severe heart failure caused by major ventricular dysfunction, patients will be taught appropriate and effective contraceptive methods.
