High-risk Newborn Referral Center

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is equipped with 24 intensive care beds and one negative pressure isolation bed, as well as the only operating room in the country located inside the NICU, and 36 beds for ill newborns. The center provides proper treatment and care for high-risk newborns and premature infants. The team consists of 5 neonatologists, 3-6 fellow physicians, hospital physicians, physical therapists, and nearly 100 nurses.

Medical Specialties of the Team

  • Hypothermia Therapy for Newborns

If the neonate suffers from hypoxia or ischemic injury due to certain reasons before or after delivery, it is called perinatal asphyxia. In order to prevent more neuronal death after brain damage, we provide hypothermia therapy to treat hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in newborns.

  • Intensive Respiratory Care for Critical Illness

We offer various comprehensive respiratory treatments for premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. The incidence of chronic lung disease in premature infants is the lowest in the country.

  • Surgical Treatment for Newborns

Equipped with the only operating room in the country located inside the NICU, we can perform surgeries including intestinal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and patent ductus arteriosus. Moreover, complex surgeries also can be performed at the operation rooms in the National Taiwan University Children's Hospital.

  • Early Assessment and Intervention of Newborn Development

After neonatologists have determined that the medical condition of premature infants is stable, the physical therapy team starts to intervene, assess their muscle tone, movement patterns, and responsiveness, and provide individualized treatment services according to their conditions. The team also communicates related information to family members and medical team members and encourages parents to participate in treatment and interact with their babies early on, promoting physiological and developmental progress.
