Year Achievements
Year 2024 Achievements The research team led by Professor Bor-luen Chiang of the Department of Pediatrics of NTUH has been developing the use of B cell-targeting biological agent as an adjuvant treatment for pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus patients. When lupus symptoms are slightly active, in addition to traditional treatment, biologics are used as an adjunct to the treatment of lupus to help maintaining the patient's symptoms from worsening dramatically and reduce the chance of flare-ups and progression to chronic renal failure. In addition, such maintenance therapy can effectively reduce the use of other drugs, especially antirheumatic drugs such as steroids, which can cause higher side effects, especially in children.
Year 2024 Achievements National Taiwan University Hospital introduced non-fluoroscopic 3D mapping and ablation procedures to Taiwan, enables 100% radiation-free surgeries for children and complex congenital heart disease patients with arrhythmias. These procedures have benefited over 500 patients, surpassing achievements in Europe and America. The hospital pioneered multiple new techniques, such as retrograde left-sided ablation, innovative cryoablation mapping and ablative strategy for atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia, which were published in top international journals.
Year 2024 Achievements The NTUH HIV team is devoted to providing state-of-the-art care and conducting HIV-related clinical researches such as evaluating the epidemiology and management of opportunistic illnesses and viral hepatitis, antiretroviral resistance and effectiveness and metabolic complications, to address the clinical challenges. Moreover, Professor Chien-Ching Hung leads the Taiwan HIV Study Group to conduct multicenter studies as well as yielding results to inform clinical decision-making and policy-making.
Year 2024 Achievements Professor Chien-Chang Lee from the Emergency Department of National Taiwan University Hospital developed the HoloXMed Mixed Reality 3D Holographic Imaging System which recognized with 2024 Edison Awards Gold Medal in the category of cutting-edge tools. This groundbreaking innovation significantly lowers the barriers to apply mixed reality technology in medicine.
Year 2023 Achievements As the demand for emergency medical service is increasing, crowding is a big challenge for medical service and care quality. National Taiwan University Hospital is the first leading hospital that developed the smart emergency department. In collaboration with National Taiwan University Artificial Intelligence Center, the hospital innovated 13 AI models for 6 key processes which cover the whole patient journey in emergency department as well as building a computing power and data platform to construct a comprehensive smart emergency department.
Year 2023 Achievements National Taiwan University Hospital diagnoses primary aldosteronism cases using non-invasive adrenal scintigraphy and C11-Metomidate techniques to determine the affected side, effectively predicting the outcomes of adrenalectomy and medication treatments. Targeting difficult or recurrent cases after adrenalectomy, the innovative CT-guided alcohol injection technique reduces aldosterone secretion by residual adrenal tissue. It is precise and offers a good prognosis, promising to become the new standard.
Year 2023 Achievements Professor Jin-Shing Chen, Director of NTUH Department of Surgery, Dr. Xu-Heng Chiang from NTUH Department of Medical Education, and professor Yi-Ping Hung from the NTU Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia collaborated to participate in the“Intelligent Medical Industry-Academia Alliance” project. They developed a metaverse-based surgical simulation system which has been successfully applied to preoperative planning, cross-disciplinary discussions, disease explanation and medical education.
Year 2023 Achievements National Taiwan University Hospital Center of Minimal-Invasive Interventional Radiology offers minimally invasive interventional treatments, with streamlined services including check-in, interventional procedures, and post-operative observation all within the same area. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the center provides cutting-edge treatments such as liver cancer treatment, stroke thrombectomy, vascular malformation embolization, precision catheter placement, and transcatheter arterial micro-embolization (TAME) for arthropathies. Committed to precise treatment and holistic care, the center is positioned to play an integral role in patient care.
Year 2023 Achievements To enhance brain science studies, NTU College of Medicine and NTU Hospital started to establish a brain bank from 2017. There have been tremendous obstacles including laws and a lack of neuropathology experts, among others. After six years of dedicated efforts by the task force to overcome all difficulties, Taiwan Brain Bank, the first one in Taiwan, was approved and formally established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2023. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities , Taiwan Brain Bank serves as the foundation for brain disease research and development of new treatments.
Year 2022 Achievements Professor Huang Li-min of the Department of Pediatrics of our hospital presided over the multi-country and multi-center clinical research of the Medigene enterovirus 71 vaccine. In Taiwan and Vietnam, a total of more than 3,000 infants aged two months to under six years were enrolled. of the two-year follow-up results revealed that the vaccine achieved a 96.8 % efficacy (95% confidence interval = 85.5-100). for EV71 disease prevention. The vaccine can cross-protect different enterovirus 71 types, including genotypes B5 and C4. Compared with the placebo group containing aluminum salt adjuvant, the vaccine group had the same incidence of adverse reactions, most of which were mild and self-limited. The breakthrough results were published in the internationally renowned journal The Lancet.
