Patient Rights

Impartial Access to Treatment
It is our hospital’s mission to provide impartial and high quality care to all the patients regardless of gender, age, race, religion, national origin, social status, or medical condition.

Professional Identity
All of our staff should wear identification cards. You have the right to refuse provided medical services if our hospital staff does not wear them.

Participation in Medical Treatment
Our medical staff should inform you or your family members regarding your health status, results from important tests, treatment plan, alternative treatment, possible outcomes, and possible risks during the consultation and treatment. We encourage you and your family to participate in the treatment and decision–making processes. You have the right to refuse or accept treatment or medical care provided by our physicians after receiving the information about its risk and benefits. We respect your right to look for a second opinion and this will not influence the quality of our services.

Communication Pertaining to Medical Care
You have the right to request or obtain further information concerning your care from our physicians or allied health professionals if you have questions about our medical services. If you need language assistance services, we will try our best to help meet your requirement. In cases of unanticipated results, our physicians and allied health professionals will explain them to you in detail and answer any questions you may have.

Informed Consent
You have the right to participate in making decisions concerning surgery, invasive tests or treatments, anesthesia, blood transfusion, or high-risk treatments. Before you sign the consent form, our physicians will inform you of the reason for undertaking the procedure, the possibility of success, its possible complications and risks, and alternatives. If the patient is unconscious or unable to communicate his or her wishes regarding care, then we will explain the circumstances to the legal representative, spouse, relatives, or legally authorized persons and obtain their consent to carry out the tests or treatments. However, according to the Taiwan Medical Care Act, emergent treatment may be administered without consent in life-threatening conditions.

Privacy and Confidentiality
It is our legal responsibility to protect your privacy and keep your medical condition confidential during clinical assessments, examinations/procedures, and transfers. Your medical record will not be used by our hospital without a justified medical reason. Other individuals cannot access or check your medical record unless they have your permission or they do so under required health regulations. If you are involved in medical research, your medical record will be audited by the NTUH Research Ethic Committee according to health related laws in order to protect your safety and privacy. If you do not wish to have certain family members apprised of your health condition, please inform your doctors and nurses in advance. The hospital will respect your right to the extent permitted by ethics and law. The hospital can also manage the availability of your hospitalization information to visitors, if you do not wish them to know your condition.

Palliative Care
Terminally-ill patients have the right to refuse cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to choose hospice and palliative care according to the regulations of the Taiwan Hospice and Palliative Care Act. Each adult can request to sign the "Advance Willingness to Receive Hospice and Palliative Care Consent Form" (including a 'Do Not Resuscitate' order), and "Designated Health Decision-Maker Authorization Form" which enables an authorized person to sign or participate in medical care-related decisions on your behalf if you cannot express your wish. You can cancel the written decisions if you change your mind.

Organ Donation
You have the right to donate your organs or tissues as you wish. You may contact the hospital's Social Work Office or our Organ Procurement Team by calling 0972-233995 or 0972-23397, or 02-23562097.

Clinical Trials
If you are interested in participating the ongoing clinical trials at NTUH, you may access our website to find more information(/ntuh/Index.action). You may also contact the National Center of Excellence for Clinical Trial and Research by calling 02-33668211 to obtain related information.

Right to Refuse Medical Activities
Our hospital is a teaching hospital. In order to promote medical education and to nurture excellent medical professionals, we request your cooperation in related teaching activities. However, you have the right to refuse any tests, research, procedures and other activities that are not medically indicated. Your refusal will not influence the quality of medical services you receive.

Hospital Rules and Your Responsibilities
Please comply with the following rules in order to ensure the safety and respect the rights of other patients.

Complying with the Treatment Plan
You have the responsibility to follow the treatment plan established by our medical team, including but not limited to medications, diet, exercises, and rehabilitation. Please provide detailed information about medical conditions, past illnesses, allergy history, current medications, and other medical remedies to our medical staff because this information is important for us. In order to protect your rights and maintain your health, please do not accept any medications or health-promoting food from unidentified persons.

Please follow the hospital rules and your responsibilities listed on the Admission Notice. If you choose to leave the hospital without permission from our physicians, you need to sign the "Against Medical Advice Form" as required by healthcare law.

Infection Control
In order to maintain your and other patients’ health, please follow the infection control measures listed below.

  • Wash your hands as needed.
  • If you have fever or respiratory infection symptoms (such as coughing), please wear a mask.
  • Please do not enter shopping centers and public areas with infusion solutions, drainage tubes, surgery gowns, or visiting gowns
  • Please avoid leaving your room or entering public areas if you have a suppressed immune system or fever.
  • Please do not leave your room without permission from our medical staff during the isolation period if you are required to be isolated. Caregivers are not allowed to contact other patients or their carers.

Environmental Sanitation
IIn order to promote air quality and environmental sanitation, please do not smoke, chew betel nuts, and eat durian fruit in the hospital. Pets are not allowed in the hospital, except for guide dogs for the blind.

Medical Record
If you wish to have a copy of your medical record, proof of diagnosis, imaging CD, or other records, you must apply in person or via your legal representative.

Hospital Bill and Related Information
You have the right to acknowledge the fees related to every procedure, test, and treatment, and to agree to pay these fees in the ways listed by our hospital. You will be informed in advance if any medical service is not covered by the Taiwan National Health Insurance (TNHI) and out-of-pocket money would be required. These medical services will not be provided without your permission.

Safety within Hospital
No entry to our hospital is allowed between 2200 and 0600, and every gate will be guarded by security staff. If you wish to enter or leave our hospital during this time while you or your family member is admitted in our hospital, you are required to show a certificate authorizing patient accompaniment. In cases of violent behavior or suspicious individuals, please help the security staff to handle these matters.

Personal Belongings
Our hospital is not responsible for any loss or damage of your personal belongings and valuables. Patients and family members are advised to secure personal belongings and valuables on their own. In cases of inability to keep your own belongings, please request help from our staff. In the event of loss of personal belongings, our hospital can help look for your belongings and accompany you to the nearby police station to report the theft, if necessary.

Photography and Videotaping
In order to maintain prompt and effective medical services, tranquility of wards, and to protect the privacy of other patients and our staff, please do not interview, photograph, or videotape within our hospital.
