Smart Hospital

"Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much;
Wisdom is humble that he knows no more."

As a university hospital and leading medical center in Taiwan, the NTUH has devoted enormous resources to medical research with the support and cooperation of the ROC Department of Health, National Health Research Institute, Academia Sinica, and the National Science Council.裝飾圖圖

The research mission of the NTUH is to foster and support excellence in basic biomedical and clinical research and in the transfer of new scientific knowledge to applications that will promote health and reduce the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of disease.

At the NTUH, investigator-initiated research projects provide the foundation for the institutional research program. These projects may focus at any point on the continuum between basic and clinical research. These projects are complemented by a variety of other research activities, including program projects, research centers that usually integrate components of translation research from population-based epidemiologic studies, community-based intervention programs, multicenter controlled clinical trials, research and development projects, and research training programs.

Research activities emphasize cellular and molecular studies related both to normal structure and function and to the causes, pathobiology, and natural history of disease, including the following main areas of particular scientific and clinical interest:

  • Genomics, Proteomics and metabolomics research.

The hospital is also known for its achievements in biotechnology and medical technology, ranging from endoscopy, miniscope surgery, and ultrasound and other imaging technology; to organ transplantation, artificial organs, and artificial joints; and to molecular diagnosis and genetic screening. To mention just a few examples. During the past six years, the hospital established six "common laboratories", with specially designed spaces to facilitate research and maximize staff efficiency and collaboration. The common laboratories also provide core facilities, which are an integral and vital part of research at the NTUH.

The institutional resources that are available include the Animal Resource Facilities, Laboratory for Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Laboratory for Informatics, a transgenic animal facility, and the Electron Microscopy Facility. The facilities available in the Core Laboratories include flow cytometry, quantitative PCR, DNA sequencing, protein chemistry and NMR, biosensors, tissue culture, confocal microscopy, micro-dissection, tissue (tumor) and cell banks. In addition, various specialized research resources are available in many basic-science and clinical departments. These laboratories and facilities provide access to important resources for investigators, students, and staff from both the College of Medicine and the hospital.
