I. A Leading Center of Nephrology in Taiwan
The Department of Nephrology at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) has been a pioneer in the development of nephrology in Taiwan since the 1960s. NTUH was among the first medical centers in Taiwan to establish hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis programs. Its Peritoneal Dialysis Center is currently the largest in Asia, caring for more than 450 peritoneal dialysis patients, and has played a pivotal role in advancing nephrology care in Taiwan.
NTUH has long upheld its three core missions: clinical care, medical education, and clinical research. The hospital maintains a leading position in Taiwan in the fields of kidney disease prevention, dialysis therapy, and kidney transplantation.
In response to the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Taiwan, NTUH established a comprehensive integrated kidney care system in 2004. This program combines multidisciplinary collaboration and multi-level care models to provide continuous medical services ranging from early screening and disease management to dialysis treatment and kidney transplantation. Through years of accumulated clinical experience and research achievements, NTUH has become a major center for nephrology care and research in Taiwan while maintaining strong connections with international developments in nephrology.
II. A Comprehensive Integrated Kidney Care System
The kidney care team at NTUH consists of nephrologists, specialized nurses, kidney disease educators, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals. Together they have established a patient-centered integrated care model, providing comprehensive services from disease prevention and diagnosis to treatment and long-term follow-up.
Aligned with national health policies, NTUH implements the Chronic Kidney Disease Integrated Care Program (CKD program) and the Pre-End-Stage Renal Disease (Pre-ESRD) Care and Education Program. Through these programs, the healthcare team provides stage-specific and individualized medical care and education, helping patients slow the progression of kidney disease and improve quality of life.
In addition, NTUH offers comprehensive pre-dialysis education, shared decision-making consultations for dialysis modality selection, long-term dialysis care, and complication management, thereby establishing a continuous and well-coordinated kidney care network.
