NTUH Asthma team

Asthma is one of the most common breathing problems, and it can seriously affect daily life if not managed well. At National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), our asthma care team is always working to improve every aspect of treatment, so patients can enjoy better health and peace of mind. Here are some of the highlights of what makes our program special:

1. Team Based Care
Our asthma team brings together experienced doctors, case managers, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and social workers. By combining expertise across different fields, we make sure patients get complete support—from medical treatment to lifestyle guidance.

  • We use an integrated case management system and digital quality monitoring to ensure care is evidence based.
  • We follow standardized asthma check ups and also manage related conditions like sleep problems, allergies, acid reflux, obesity, lung recovery, and mental health.
  • We create easy to understand educational materials and videos to help patients and families learn the right way to use inhalers and understand asthma.

2. Shared Decision Making (SDM)

We believe patients should be partners in their own care. That’s why we practice shared decision making, where doctors and patients discuss options together and choose the best inhaler treatment.

  • Our team provides clear, evidence based information using tools like charts, cards, and videos.
  • Patients can share their preferences and expectations, and together we reach a decision that fits their needs.
  • One key topic is “Which inhaler is right for me?”—and we use both printed materials and videos to guide patients.

This approach has been very successful: in 2025, every patient who joined the SDM program reported 100% satisfaction.

3. Environment Friendly Choices

We also care about the planet. Starting in 2025, we began offering patients the option to choose inhalers that are more eco friendly and produce less carbon emissions—without compromising treatment results. This way, patients can protect their health and help protect the environment at the same time.

Results That Stand Out

  • High enrollment rates: NTUH’s asthma program consistently ranks above average compared to other medical centers in northern Taiwan, often close to 90%.
  • Better asthma control: In 2025, about 87% of patients in our program had their asthma well controlled.
  • Excellent quality indicators: We track 10 key measures, including inhaler use, lung function tests, asthma control checks, and hospital readmission rates. Our two week readmission rate was 0.0%, showing outstanding care results.
  • Award winning care: NTUH has repeatedly been recognized by Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Administration for top quality asthma care, including awards in 2024.

In short: Asthma care at NTUH means expert teamwork, patient centered decisions, and eco friendly options—all backed by proven results
