Nutrition Support Team

Under the leadership of Dr. Chen Wei Jhao, the Nutrition Support Team was formally estabished in August 1986. The purpose of the Nutrition Support Team is to provide appropriate nutrition support to patients helping patients to maintain good nutrition, to decrease or avoid the possibility of complications so that patients can get well more quickly. The Nutrition Support Team consists of doctors, pharmacists, dietitians, and nurses. In addition, a cross-departmental Nutrition Treatment Committee, was set up in 1995 and a total of 17 members are included in the Committee.


The nurse of the Nutrition Support Team deals with factors related to the patient’s nutrition treatment:

  1. Work description
    1. Tube Feeding Aspects
      (1) Record patient’s reaction to tube feeding, diet arrangement, supply route and quantity supplied.
      (2) Explore the cause and treatment of complications.
      (3) Arrange tube feeding for patient, if necessary.
      (4) Work with the clinical dietitian to supply special formula tube feeding to improve patient’s nutritional state.
       
    2. Total Parenteral Nutrition Aspects
      (1) Give instructions on the correct procedures for changing I.V. set and gauze.
      (2) Give instructions on the correct procedures for applying adjust infusion.
      (3) Explore the cause and the treatment of complications.
      (4) Give instructions to the Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) patient and caregiver concerning changing the I.V. set and gauze, correct procedures for giving solutions, and follow up HPN patient’s nutrition condition on a regular basis.
       
    3. Follow up the patient's laboratory data related to nutrition treatment and evaluate its effect.
       
    4. Arrange coordination with related departments if any clinical nutrition treatment problem arises.
       
    5. Submit work report and work plan on monthly basis and list all nutrition treatment cases in outline.
       
  2. Educational responsibilities
    1. Educate patients with all the necessary knowledge regarding nutrition supply and the correct way of application.
    2. Supply nutrition information consultancy and assist other medical staff.
       
  3. Research responsibilities
    1. Engage in nursing research related to nutrition treatment.
    2. Engage in joint research with other members in Nutrition Support Team on subjects related to nutrition treatment.
