PREFACE
There are 4 divisions in department of pathology: the surgical pathology, autopsy and forensic pathology, cytopathology and molecular pathology. The specimen number submitted had been increasing about 3~5% every year in the past 10 years, except in 2003, when the SARS disaster occurred, the specimen number was a little bit less. Our team members include 20 attending pathologists in charge many subspecialties, 9 residents in training and 24 technicians for laboratory services. The most striking service in our hospital is the transplantation teams: heart, lung, liver and renal transplants. That makes our department have precious experiences and fruitful outcomes. Regarding the research, our colleagues published the results, most of which were derived from translational researches, in a lot of well qualified journals. In addition to research and routine hospital services, we also spent a lot of time in some kind of special services for surgical pathology. For example: tumor mapping & necrosis rate assessment for the osteosarcoma after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Such service is infrequent in other Taiwanese hospitals. Besides, searching for acid fast bacilli is another time-consuming and painstaking job but this is our obligation in our country for helping Tb control and prevention. The quality indicators of our department, including the turnaround time of small specimen biopsy≦ 3 days, and of total cases ≦ 7 days, malignancy case review and frozen section accuracy, are quite satisfied.
HISTORY
The antecedent of the Department of Pathology was the Classroom of Pathology, College of Medicine, Taihoku (Taipei) Imperial University. After the World War II in 1945, it was renamed as Department of Pathology, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University. The Institute of Pathology was established in June, 1947. Department and Graduate Institute of Pathology moved into University Hospital in 1953. Department of Pathology of National Taiwan University Hospital was then established in 1954. The combined unit has become a very special department and provides teaching, research, service, and residency training center in Taiwan.
